ISSB consults on proposed Practice Statement for nature-related disclosures

The International Sustainability Standards Board has published proposals for a Practice Statement on nature-related disclosures, adding detail on how companies applying IFRS S1 report material nature-related risks and opportunities. Comments are open until 19 February 2027.

On 22 October 2026, the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) opened a consultation on proposals for nature-related disclosures. The proposals take the form of a Practice Statement and are intended to help companies give investors material information about nature-related risks and opportunities, including those that arise from a company's dependencies and impacts on nature.

Companies applying IFRS S1 General Requirements for Disclosure of Sustainability-related Financial Information are already required to disclose material sustainability-related risks and opportunities, including nature-related ones. The proposed Practice Statement adds detail on how to provide this information. The ISSB says the approach is designed to avoid siloed reporting, so that investors can see the connections between nature, climate, other sustainability matters and the financial statements.

A company is not required to comply with a Practice Statement in order to state compliance with ISSB Standards. The ISSB says this approach supports high-quality disclosures while avoiding disruption for companies and jurisdictions implementing its Standards. The consultation also asks whether the content should be finalised as a Practice Statement or issued in another form, such as a Standard.

The ISSB drew extensively on the work of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). The proposals place particular emphasis on location and on engagement with Indigenous Peoples, Local Communities and affected stakeholders, and are designed so that companies can use GRI or ESRS efficiently alongside the Practice Statement.

The comment period is 120 days and closes on 19 February 2027. The consultation package includes the Exposure Draft, a Basis for Conclusions, accompanying guidance and a snapshot summary.
